Kalsi is a historic riverside town and nationally protected heritage site located at the scenic confluence of the Yamuna and Tons rivers, roughly 42 kilometers south of Chakrata in Uttarakhand. Perched at an altitude of approximately 780 meters, this ancient gateway to the Jaunsar Bawar region is world renowned for housing the Ashokan Rock Edict dating back to 253 BC.
Inscribed on a mammoth quartz boulder measuring 10 feet high and 8 feet wide, the 14 Major Rock Edicts of Mauryan Emperor Ashoka are carved in ancient Brahmi script and Pali/Prakrit language. The inscriptions advocate moral virtues, non violence (Ahimsa), religious tolerance, and humane treatment of animals, topped with a delicate carved outline of an elephant labeled 'Gajatame' (Best Elephant). Maintained within a peaceful ASI garden park, it draws historians, archaeologists, and curious travelers alike.
Truth is, standing before 2,200 year old royal proclamations carved into natural Himalayan stone while Yamuna breezes rustle through ancient mango groves is awe inspiring. It represents the only Ashokan rock edict discovered in all of northern Uttarakhand.
The best time to visit Kalsi is from October to April when the valley climate is cool, pleasant, and ideal for heritage walks.
