St. Philomena's Cathedral, rising gracefully above Ashoka Road in central Mysore (Mysuru) in Karnataka, is one of the tallest churches in Asia and is one of India's most striking masterpieces of Neo Gothic cathedral architecture.
Constructed in 1936 under the visionary secular patronage of Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV and designed by French architect Daly, this monumental cathedral was modeled directly after the celebrated Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom) in Germany.
It's the home of soaring twin 175 foot-tall Neo Gothic spires dominating the city skyline, exquisite stained glass windows imported from France illustrating the life of Jesus Christ, an atmospheric subterranean stone crypt preserving a sacred 3rd century relic of Saint Philomena, and a grand cruciform nave accommodating over 800 worshippers.
It represents a rich cultural symbol of Mysore's royal harmony, where European ecclesiastical craftsmanship, French artistic glasswork, and Wadiyar princely generosity unite in the heart of the heritage capital.
Located in Lashkar Mohalla, it sits 2 km northeast of the world famous Mysore Palace, 3 km from Mysore Junction Railway Station, and 12 km from Mysore Airport, easily accessible by local transport.
The roots of the cathedral trace back to 1843, when Maharaja Mummadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar III gifted land to build a modest Roman Catholic church for European soldiers and local Christians serving the royal state.
By the 1930s, the growing congregation required a larger sanctuary. Demonstrating the Wadiyar dynasty's renowned religious tolerance, Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV laid the foundation stone for the present cathedral in October 1933.
Truth is, French architect Daly drafted the plans drawing inspiration from Gothic cathedrals across northern Europe, incorporating flying buttresses, pointed ribbed vaults, clustered stone columns, and high arched clerestory windows.
French Stained Glass Windows: The windows adorning the sanctuary walls were crafted by master glass artists in France. They depict vivid biblical narratives including the Nativity, the Last Supper, the Crucifixion, the Resurrection, and the Ascension, filtering colorful beams of amber, ruby, and sapphire light across the marble altar.
The Subterranean Crypt: A staircase near the altar leads downward into a cool, quiet underground stone catacomb built beneath the sanctum. Here lies a marble statue and a sacred relic (bone fragment) of Saint Philomena, a 3rd century Greek martyr.
The twin spires of the cathedral, rising 175 feet (53 meters) into the sky, are visible from several kilometers away across Mysore. The spacious prayer hall provides a quiet retreat from the bustling markets of Ashoka Road.
During the annual Feast of Saint Philomena on August 11 and the Christmas season in December, the cathedral is illuminated with thousands of fairy lights, hosting choral services and festive evening processions.
Combine your cathedral tour with visits to the iconic Mysore Palace, the hilltop Chamundeshwari Temple, the sprawling Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, and the illuminated Brindavan Gardens for a complete Mysore royal holiday.
Reaching St. Philomena's Cathedral on Ashoka Road is easy from anywhere in Mysore in Karnataka.
