Alagar Kovil, formally venerated as the Arulmigu Kallazhagar Temple, sits at the scenic foot of the verdant Alagarmalai (Alagar Hills) 21 km northeast of Madurai in Tamil Nadu, standing as one of the most sacred 108 Divya Desam shrines dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
Celebrated in classical Tamil Sangam literature and sung by the ancient Vaishnavite Alwars as Thirumaliruncholai, this fortified temple complex blends millennium old spiritual antiquity with Dravidian granite architecture, sacred mountain springs, and legendary festival traditions.
It's the home of the exquisitely handsome golden processional deity Lord Kallazhagar (Sundararajar), the historic 18 step guardian shrine of Pathinettam Padi Karuppasamy, lifelike Nayaka era stone sculptures depicting Narasimha and Manmatha, and the sacred hill stream of Noopura Gangai (Silambaru).
It represents a rich cultural epicenter where Vaishnavite devotion, Shaivite fraternity, rural folklore, and monumental temple festivities unite across the historic Pandya heartland.
Located in the peaceful Alagarmalai valley, it sits 21 km from Madurai Junction Railway Station, 32 km from Madurai International Airport, and just 3 km below the famous Pazhamudhircholai Murugan Temple.
The temple's origins date back over two thousand years, mentioned with great reverence in the ancient Sangam epics Silappadikaram and Paripadal. Six of the twelve Alwar saints, including Periyalwar, Andal, Nammalwar, and Bhoothathalwar, composed 128 soul stirring hymns praising the beauty of the presiding deity.
The sanctum sanctorum enshrines Lord Paramaswamy in a majestic standing posture holding the divine conch and discus, flanked by Goddess Sridevi and Bhoodevi under the Somachanda Vimana.
Truth is, the processional idol of Lord Kallazhagar, sculpted from pure panchaloha with natural golden luster, is considered by art historians to be one of the finest bronze sculptures in South India.
The annual Chithirai Festival (held in April May) is one of the largest religious gatherings on Earth, attracting over 2.5 million devotees. It enacts the journey of Lord Kallazhagar from his hill abode to Madurai to attend the divine wedding of his sister Goddess Meenakshi to Lord Sundareswarar.
Riding a grand golden horse mount (Thanga Kuthirai), Lord Kallazhagar enters the waters of River Vaigai (Azhagar Aatril Iranguthal) amidst thunderous chants of "Govinda! Govinda!" from millions of pilgrims dressed in colorful saffron and red robes.
Nayaka Stone Sculptures: The Kalyana Mandapam inside the temple exhibits masterworks of 16th century Nayaka stone carving. Huge monolithic pillars depict Lord Narasimha tearing open the demon Hiranyakashipu, Lord Krishna playing the flute, and Kamadeva riding a parrot with lifelike muscular precision.
Pathinettam Padi Karuppasamy: The monumental eastern entrance tower is guarded by Lord Karuppasamy through eighteen sacred steps. Devotees offer special prayers here for justice and protection before entering the inner temple.
After offering prayers at Alagar Kovil, travel 3 km uphill to visit the holy spring of Noopura Gangai and Pazhamudhircholai Murugan Temple (one of the Six Abodes of Murugan) before returning to explore the monumental Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai.
Reaching Alagar Kovil from central Madurai is simple via continuous road transport across Tamil Nadu.
