The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR), affectionately known worldwide as the Ooty Toy Train, winds through the striking mist clad peaks and tea covered valleys of Ooty (Udhagamandalam) in Tamil Nadu, recognized globally as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Completed in 1908 after decades of intrepid hill engineering, this 46 kilometer meter gauge marvel is India's only rack and-pinion mountain railway, climbing from the plains of Mettupalayam at 1,069 feet to the alpine heights of Ooty at 7,228 feet above sea level.
It's the home of vintage Swiss built 'X' Class steam locomotives chugging through 16 mountain tunnels and over 250 stone viaducts, emerald green tea gardens cascading down steep slopes, fragrant eucalyptus and shola forests, and panoramic views across the deep Ketti Valley.
It represents a rich technological milestone where Edwardian railway engineering, nostalgic steam heritage, indigenous biodiversity, and romantic Nilgiri hill station exploration unite across Western Ghats ridges.
Connecting Mettupalayam Junction near Coimbatore with Coonoor, Wellington, and Ooty, it sits 90 km from Coimbatore International Airport, offering one of the world's most scenic train journeys.
The construction of the line was first proposed in 1854, but the formidable terrain of the Nilgiri hills delayed work until Swiss engineer Roman Abt invented the alternate biting rack and pinion system.
Between Mettupalayam and Coonoor, the railway negotiates an extraordinary gradient of 1 in 12.5 (8%). A double toothed rack rail running down the center of the track engages with pinions on the steam locomotive, preventing slippage and allowing the train to ascend the steep incline safely.
Truth is, the iconic blue and cream steam locomotives push the coaches from behind on the uphill journey and lead from the front while descending to ensure maximum braking safety.
The 46 kilometer journey takes passengers through 208 curves and crosses 250 bridges, including majestic stone arched viaducts spanning deep gorges and mountain streams.
Starting from Mettupalayam, the train chugs through Kallar and Adderley into dense tropical rainforests, climbing toward Hillgrove where passengers step out to sip hot Nilgiri tea while the steam engine takes on fresh spring water.
Beyond Coonoor, the line shifts to diesel traction as it traverses the military cantonment of Wellington, the cordite town of Aravankadu, the sweeping agricultural terraces of Ketti Valley, and the quiet pine forests of Lovedale before arriving at Udhagamandalam.
Advance IRCTC Reservation: Due to international popularity and limited seating capacity, advance booking through the official IRCTC portal up to 120 days in advance is strongly recommended, especially for First Class coaches.
Coonoor Ooty Shuttles: If full route tickets from Mettupalayam are sold out, you can easily experience the toy train by booking the frequent shuttle services running between Coonoor and Ooty throughout the day.
After stepping off the train in Ooty, continue your holiday exploring the Government Botanical Garden, Doddabetta Peak (the highest in the Nilgiris), Ooty Lake, and the scenic Pykara waterfalls for a complete Queen of Hill Stations getaway.
Reaching the Nilgiri Mountain Railway is simple from Coimbatore, Bangalore, and Chennai across Tamil Nadu.
