Matheran

Matheran

Matheran is an important hill station of Maharashtra as it is the closest one to Mumbai and Pune. This 800m high hill station is located in Alibagh district of Maharashtra. It is appealing to have a view of the valleys from this green and calm hill station. One can also see Mumbai from Hart Point. Such viewings are most suitable on clean and unclouded days. The exhausted tourists from nearby Mumbai and Pune cities take a break here to breathe fresh air. Vehicles are banned in Matheran that makes the journey to this hill station so adventurous. It also makes the place so quiet, serene and peaceful. The journey includes an adventurous two-hour joyride in a toy train.

The best part about going to Matheran, the starting point for which is the railway station of Neral on the Mumbai-Pune route, is that you can buy a ride on the tiny train that traverses the narrow gauge track to the top, offering you on the way breathtaking sights even as it negotiates the bends and the curves. The train makes its way around the verdant slopes and through thick forest cover, passing on its way a ‘one kiss tunnel’ to take brief halts at Jumma Patti, Water Pipe and Aman. Known as the ‘pedestrian’ hill station because all vehicles have to per force stop at Dasturi and tourists have to either walk or hitch a horse ride into Matheran, it is perched at 803 meters above the sea level. The hill station in itself is an undulating hilltop cloaked in shady trees and ringed by walking trails leading to several vantage points from where you can have stunning view

Located in the Raigad district of Maharashtra, this beautiful hill station is untouched by the busy city life surrounding it. It has pleasant weather throughout the year, though this place is most beautiful during the monsoon season and is also just 54 km and two hours away from Mumbai. Matheran has been declared as an Eco sensitive region by the government and automobiles are not allowed inside the town. It is therefore a very tranquil place with no buzzing of cars and other modes of transpo
