Belur Math, situated along the tranquil western bank of the sacred Hooghly River in Belur, Howrah, near Kolkata in West Bengal, stands as the global headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, revered worldwide for its unique universal temple architecture.
Founded in 1897 by Swami Vivekananda, the chief disciple of the 19th century mystic Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, this 40 acre spiritual campus embodies the profound Vedantic principle of the harmony of all world faiths.
It's the home of the grand Chunar sandstone Sri Ramakrishna Temple designed as a synthesis of Hindu, Islamic, Christian, and Buddhist motifs, the peaceful Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi Temple on the riverbank, the Swami Vivekananda Samadhi Temple under a sacred bael tree, and the soul stirring evening Sandhya Aarti congregational prayer.
It represents a rich spiritual and cultural sanctuary where universal brotherhood, selfless humanitarian service, philosophical introspection, and historic Bengal Renaissance ideals unite beside flowing river waters.
Located in Howrah district, it sits 4 km north of Howrah Railway Station, 13 km from Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, and directly across the river from the historic Dakshineswar Kali Temple.
Following his triumphant return from the 1893 Parliament of Religions in Chicago, Swami Vivekananda acquired this peaceful riverfront estate in 1897 to establish a permanent monastic headquarters dedicated to spiritual realization and social upliftment.
Swami Vivekananda envisioned a central temple that would visually proclaim Sri Ramakrishna's core message: "Yato mat, tato path" (As many faiths, so many paths). The temple architecture was engineered by civil engineer turned-monk Swami Vijnanananda and completed in 1938.
Truth is, when viewed from different angles, the building reveals elements of Mughal domes and arches, Christian cathedral cruciform layouts, Buddhist chaitya horseshoe windows, and traditional South Indian and Orissan Hindu temple spires.
The Sri Ramakrishna Temple: The main sanctum enshrines a lifelike seated statue of Sri Ramakrishna carved from pure white Italian marble on a blooming hundred petaled lotus by master sculptor G. K. Mhatre.
Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi Temple: Built right above the riverside ghat where Holy Mother Sarada Devi's mortal remains were consecrated in 1920, looking out across the gentle waters of the Hooghly.
Swami Vivekananda Temple & Room: A two tiered temple marking the exact spot on the riverbank where Swamiji was cremated in 1902. Visitors can also step inside Swamiji's preserved living room, viewing his original bed, study table, and writing materials.
At dusk every evening, a brass bell tolls to announce the Sandhya Aarti. Thousands of devotees gather in the vast prayer hall to sing the famous hymn "Khandana Bhava Bandhana" composed by Swami Vivekananda in absolute stillness and devotion.
Taking a local country ferry across the Hooghly River between Belur Math Ghat and Dakshineswar Kali Temple offers panoramic river views of temple towers reflecting in golden sunset waters.
Combine your visit to Belur Math with Dakshineswar Temple, Kumartuli idol makers alley, and the Victoria Memorial for an unforgettable heritage journey through Kolkata and Howrah.
Reaching Belur Math in Howrah is straightforward from anywhere across Kolkata in West Bengal.
