Vishansar Lake

Vishansar Lake sits at a commanding elevation of 3,710 meters (12,172 feet) in the high alpine wilderness of Ganderbal district near Sonamarg. Known culturally as the Lake of Lord Vishnu, this striking high altitude oligotrophic tarn is fed by mountain glaciers and seasonal snowpack. The lake stretches nearly one kilometer in length, presenting an ever changing water color that shifts from deep turquoise at noon to cobalt blue as shadows lengthen across the surrounding peaks.

Vishansar forms the lower half of the famous twin lake duo alongside neighboring Kishansar Lake, separated by a gentle ridge of rolling alpine meadow. Water from Kishansar flows directly down into Vishansar, creating an outlet stream that feeds the upper reaches of the Kishanganga (Neelum) River. In July and August, lush carpeted banks around the lake erupt into dense clusters of wild alpine geraniums, gentians, potentillas, and Himalayan poppies.

Trekking groups on the Great Lakes expedition set up their main alpine camp along the grassy shores of Vishansar after crossing the demanding 4,100 meter Nichnai Pass from Sonamarg. The lake provides an unforgettable resting stop where hikers pitch colorful dome tents, prepare hot meals, and watch evening alpenglow illuminate massive rocky headwalls reflecting across the glassy water surface.

Brown Trout Fishing & Mountain Ecology

Vishansar is celebrated across Jammu and Kashmir as a premier high altitude angling destination. Its cold, oxygen rich glacial waters host healthy stocks of wild brown trout introduced during the British colonial era. Sport anglers can cast fly lines along shoreline boulders with day permits issued by the Fisheries Department, surrounded by soaring alpine choughs and rare Himalayan marmots.

Trek Route, Fitness & Camping Essentials

Reaching Vishansar requires a 2 day trek starting from Shitkadi base camp near Sonamarg. The route ascends through silver birch groves at Table Top before crossing rocky boulder fields over Nichnai Pass. Hikers must carry sturdy high ankle trekking shoes, multi layered fleece clothing, warm thermal base layers, and rainproof gear to handle sudden mountain weather changes.
