Gadsar Lake

Gadsar Lake rests at a striking elevation of 3,600 meters (11,811 feet) in the high alpine wilderness of Ganderbal district near Sonamarg. Also known locally as the Lake of Flowers or Yemsar, this pristine oligotrophic body of water is widely regarded as one of the most scenic high altitude tarns in the western Himalayas. The lake is fed by melting glacial runoff cascading down rugged granite ridges, resulting in crystal clear aquamarine water that reflects towering snow clad summits.

During midsummer from July to August, the alpine meadows surrounding the lake burst into a colorful carpet of rare Himalayan wildflowers, including blue poppies, gentians, potentillas, and wild geums. The lake drains out through a subterranean outflow channel that emerges further down the valley to join the Neelum River across the border. Trekking groups crossing the demanding 4,200 meter Gadsar Pass are greeted by an unforgettable aerial panorama as the sparkling turquoise lake suddenly comes into full view below.

Because of its remote high mountain location, Gadsar Lake has zero permanent human settlements or commercial hotels. It forms an essential highlight along the world famous Kashmir Great Lakes trek originating from Shitkadi near Sonamarg. Hikers camp under star studded night skies on the soft grassy banks, listening to the gentle murmur of glacial melt streams flowing into the deep blue water.

Trout Fishing & High Altitude Wildlife

Gadsar Lake is renowned among high altitude anglers for its thriving population of wild brown trout and snow trout. Special fishing permits must be arranged in advance through the Jammu and Kashmir Fisheries Department in Srinagar. The surrounding rocky slopes and birch forests are home to rare Himalayan wildlife, including the endangered musk deer, Himalayan marmots, and golden eagles soaring over high mountain cliffs.

Trek Route, Permits & Camping Guidelines

Reaching Gadsar Lake requires completing a multi day wilderness trek typically starting from Sonamarg or Naranag. Trekkers must carry valid government photo identification and register with the local military check post situated near the lake outlet. Independent hikers should always travel with experienced local Kashmiri mountain guides, sturdy alpine tents, and warm sleeping gear rated for sub zero night temperatures.
