Baijnath Shiva Temple is a grand 13th century stone temple built in 1204 AD in classical Nagara style architecture on the banks of the Binwa River. Situated 16 km from the tea gardens of Palampur, it is one of the most revered medieval pilgrimage monuments in Himachal Pradesh.
Dedicated to Lord Shiva as Vaidyanath (Lord of Physicians), the inner sanctum houses a self manifested Svayambhu Shiva Lingam. In Hindu mythology, King Ravana meditated and offered his ten heads to Lord Shiva right at this spot. In respect for Ravana devotion, local townspeople do not celebrate Dussehra or burn effigies.
Truth is, the temple was constructed by two merchant brothers, Manyuka and Manyuka, and features elaborate stone relief carvings of Hindu deities, celestial nymphs, and mythological beasts. The high curvilinear shikhara tower stands gracefully surrounded by lush green ASI protected lawn courtyards.
