Somnath Temple

Rising directly beside the crashing surf of the Arabian Sea in Somnath, the glorious Somnath Temple stands as the foremost of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Known traditionally as the Shrine Eternal, this revered pilgrimage seat in Gujarat embodies centuries of spiritual resilience, having risen repeatedly from ruins into an imposing sandstone monument.

Truth is, standing in the breezy temple courtyard with ocean waves breaking against the seawall behind you is an unforgettable experience. The present temple, reconstructed in the Chalukya or Solanki style of architecture under the guidance of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and inaugurated in 1951, showcases master craftsmanship in honey colored sandstone sourced from Saurashtra quarries.

The temple complex houses the sacred Jyotirlinga in its inner sanctum, adorned daily with elaborate floral shringar and silver ornaments. Outside on the sea facing terrace, visitors marvel at the ancient Baan Stambh (Arrow Pillar), which points straight to the South Pole with an unbroken sea route across the Southern Ocean. Pilgrims typically combine darshan here with sacred rituals at nearby Triveni Sangam and Bhalka Tirth.

Architectural Grandeur and Temple Layout

The temple shikhara towers 155 feet into the coastal sky, crowned by a massive kalash and a fluttering saffron flag visible from miles away across the Kathiawar peninsula. The entrance hall or sabha mandapa features intricately carved stone pillars, geometric ceiling rosettes, and stone brackets displaying dancing apsaras and guardian deities.

Walking along the circumambulatory path (pradakshina path), devotees admire detailed relief carvings depicting Shiva legends, celestial musicians, and traditional floral patterns. The ocean facing walkways allow visitors to absorb the continuous rhythm of sea waves while offering silent prayers before visiting Prabhas Patan Museum and Parshuram Temple.

Aarti Ceremonies, Darshan, and Light & Sound Show

Somnath Temple conducts three grand daily aartis: morning Mangla Aarti at 7:00 AM, midday Bhog Aarti at 12:00 PM, and evening Sandhya Aarti at 7:00 PM. The evening aarti is particularly stirring, with temple conches, nagada drums, and brass bells reverberating through the stone corridors.

Every evening after sunset, the temple hosts the renowned Sound and Light Show ("Jay Somnath") projected against the illuminated stone facade with voiceover narrations detailing the epic history and reconstructions of the temple. Tickets for the show can be bought near the temple office counters.

Mind you, security protocol is extremely strict around the temple perimeter. Mobile phones, smartwatches, cameras, leather items, and bags are prohibited inside the complex and must be deposited in the secure locker facility near the main entrance.

Practical Pilgrim Advice, Dress Code, and Trust Facilities

The temple opens daily from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM, allowing continuous darshan except during brief aarti preparation intervals. Modest, traditional attire is required for entering the sanctum area. Wheelchairs and battery operated golf carts are available for elderly pilgrims and individuals with mobility needs.

The Shree Somnath Trust manages well organized guest houses (Sagar Darshan, Maheshwari Bhawan), affordable dining halls serving clean vegetarian meals, and ticket booking portals for special VIP darshan or sankalp pujas. You can easily stroll between the temple and nearby Gita Mandir.
