Situated inside the shaded grounds of Jubilee Garden in central Rajkot, the Watson Museum stands as the second most important museum in Gujarat after the Baroda Museum. Established in 1888 to commemorate Colonel John Watson, the British Political Agent of Kathiawar from 1881 to 1889, this venerable repository preserves the rich archaeological, numismatic, and ethnographic heritage of Saurashtra.
Truth is, walking through the Victorian Italianate arches of the museum is like opening an illustrated encyclopedia of western Indian civilization. Designed by state engineer Sir Robert Bell Booth, the building features polished local sandstone facades, classical pediments, and high ceiling galleries illuminated by grand skylights.
The museum safeguards thousands of rare artifacts spanning from the Harappan civilization and Mohenjo Daro trade links to medieval Rajput weaponry and colonial Kathiawar regalia. In the center of the main hall stands a grand white Italian marble statue of Queen Victoria presented by regional princely rulers. Visiting the museum pairs perfectly with stops at Kaba Gandhi No Delo and Rajkumar College.
The archaeological wing displays pottery shards, terracotta seals, and weight measures unearthed from Indus Valley excavation sites across Saurashtra including Rangpur and Padri. Intricate stone sculptures from the 3rd to 13th centuries represent Maitraka, Solanki, and Gurjara Pratihara dynasties.
Numismatists will appreciate the extensive coin gallery containing punch marked coins, Kshatrapa silver drachmas, Gupta gold dinars, and princely state currency. Detailed copper plate inscriptions preserve royal land grants written in ancient Brahmi and Nagari scripts before moving on to Rashtriya Shala.
The ethnographic section showcases traditional lifestyle objects of Kathiawar tribes including Bharwad, Rabari, and Charan communities. Embroidered kedia jackets, beadwork tapestries, mirror work torans, and silver jewelry illustrate regional folk artistry.
The royal armory exhibits damascened steel swords, matchlock guns, ivory hilted daggers, and chainmail armor used during regional skirmishes by Kathiawar chieftains. Mind you, each exhibit features clear Gujarati and English informational placards detailing provenance and historical context.
Watson Museum is open Wednesday through Monday from 9:30 AM to 12:45 PM and from 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM (closed on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays). Entry tickets are exceptionally affordable, costing approximately 5 to 10 rupees per visitor.
Located within Jubilee Garden near the central post office, the museum is just 1.5 km from Rajkot Junction. Plan for roughly 60 to 90 minutes to explore the galleries before relaxing in the adjacent garden or heading to Ramakrishna Ashram.
