Tucked within the vibrant historic core along Ghee Kanta Road in Rajkot, Kaba Gandhi No Delo holds immense national significance as the ancestral childhood residence of Mahatma Gandhi. It was here that Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi spent his formative schooling years from 1881 to 1887 while his father, Karamchand Gandhi (affectionately known as Kaba Gandhi), served as the Diwan (Prime Minister) to the Nawab of Rajkot in Gujarat.
Truth is, stepping through the traditional Saurashtrian wooden gateway instantly transports you back into nineteenth century Kathiawar domestic life. The heritage house follows the traditional haveli design, built with whitewashed limestone walls, heavy Burma teakwood beams, carved brackets, and an intimate central open air courtyard (delo) where natural light pours onto red oxide floors.
Today, the premises function as a memorial and museum managed by a dedicated heritage trust under the banner of Gandhi Smriti. The quiet rooms that once echoed with young Mohandas daily routines now house a curated permanent pictorial exhibition chronicling his transition from an introverted schoolboy at Alfred High School to the leader of India freedom struggle. Combine this stop with visits to Rashtriya Shala and Rajkumar College.
The museum gallery displays rare black and white photographs, personal letters, family genealogy charts, and bilingual interpretive captions highlighting key turning points in Gandhi life. Visitors can observe original wooden spinning wheels (charkhas), handcrafted handloom artifacts, and period furniture reflecting austere simplicity.
A dedicated wing conducts vocational sewing and embroidery training programs for local women, honoring the Gandhian philosophy of rural self reliance (Swavalamban). Spending a few minutes observing the rhythmic hum of spinning wheels offers a genuine touch of living heritage before moving on to Watson Museum.
The structure itself is a remarkable specimen of vernacular western Indian architecture, featuring low ceiling rooms designed for thermal insulation during scorching Saurashtra summers, arched ventilation alcoves, and delicate brass door knockers. The peaceful atmosphere inside the delo offers a stark contrast to the busy market streets outside.
Mind you, visitors are required to remove footwear before entering the interior gallery rooms out of respect for the sanctified historical space. Informative booklets on Gandhian literature and authentic khadi handkerchiefs are available at the entrance reception counter.
Kaba Gandhi No Delo is open to visitors daily from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, remaining closed on Sundays and national holidays. Entry is completely free of charge, making it accessible to students, historians, and pilgrims from all walks of life.
The site is conveniently situated just 1.5 km from Rajkot Junction railway station and can be easily reached by shared auto rickshaws or city buses. Plan for roughly 45 minutes to tour the house comfortably before heading toward Ramakrishna Ashram or Rotary Dolls Museum.
