Engineered without mortar using inverted locking stone joints, the temple was oriented precisely along the Tropic of Cancer so that on the day of the vernal and autumnal equinoxes, the first rays of the rising sun shone directly through the carved pillared doorways to illuminate the diamond studded crown of Lord Surya in the inner sanctum.
