Mount Girnar

Rising precipitously above the dry deciduous forests of Saurashtra to an elevation of 1,031 meters (3,383 feet), Mount Girnar in Junagadh is the highest mountain peak in Gujarat. Revered since antiquity by both Hindu and Jain pilgrims, this ancient volcanic pluton represents one of the most sacred spiritual complexes in western India.

Truth is, tackling the legendary 9,999 stone steps carved into the sheer granite face is considered a transformative spiritual pilgrimage. The climb winds past sacred springs, lush forested ridges populated by Asiatic lions and langurs, medieval rest pavilions, and ancient Jain rock sanctuaries. For those seeking a faster ascent, the modern Girnar Ropeway transports passengers from Girnar Taleti to the Ambaji summit plateau in just under ten minutes.

The mountain comprises five distinct summits crowned with sacred shrines: the 12th century Neminath Jain Temples, Ambaji Temple, Gorakhnath Peak, Oghad Shikhar, and the isolated pinnacle of Guru Dattatreya Paduka. Pilgrims traditionally begin their ascent before dawn from Girnar Taleti, right after offering morning prayers at Damodar Kund and viewing Ashoka Rock Edicts.

Historic Jain Temples and Ambaji Summit

At around the 3,800th step sits the grand fortified complex of 16 Jain temples. The largest is dedicated to Lord Neminath (the 22nd Tirthankara), who attained renunciation and Moksha on these very cliffs. Carved from gleaming white marble and local sandstone, the temple courtyards feature delicate ceiling rosettes, pillared colonnades, and ornate toranas.

Further up around the 5,000th step, pilgrims reach the ancient Ambaji Temple, a revered Shakti Peetha where newly married couples seek divine blessings. The panoramic view from the temple parapet over the vast plains of Kathiawar is striking before continuing your tour toward Uparkot Fort.

The Pinnacle of Guru Dattatreya and Gorakhnath Peak

Beyond Ambaji, the trail descends into a deep ravine before rising sharply toward the Gorakhnath Peak (the highest point of the mountain at 1,031 meters). From here, a narrow stone staircase cut into sheer granite ledges leads to the sacred footprint (paduka) shrine of Lord Dattatreya on the fifth summit.

Mind you, the final stretch to Dattatreya peak is physically demanding with steep drops on both sides, but the spiritual energy and sweeping mountain vistas reward every ounce of effort. Local doli (palanquin) bearers are available at the base for elderly pilgrims unable to climb.

Girnar Ropeway, Parikrama Fair, and Practical Travel Advice

The state of the art Girnar Ropeway operates daily from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, carrying passengers across a 2.3 km aerial span with enclosed glass cabins. Return ropeway tickets cost approximately 700 to 800 rupees per passenger.
