Sultanganj is a city located in the Bhagalpur district of the Indian state of Bihar. It is situated on the south bank of Ganga river, 25 km west of Bhagalpur city. Sultangang is traditionally associated with sage Jahnu, whose ashram was a centre of learning and culture. Jahnu Muni's ashram was located on the rock jutting out of the bed of the Ganga river. Now the site has the Shiva temple of Ajgaivinath, also known as Gaibinath Mahadeo.According to the legend lord Shiva took here a bow known as Ajgav and so the place came to be known as Ajgaivinath. It is commonly said that Kalapahar failed to demolish Ajgaivinath temple but he could destroy the Parvati temple on the neighbouring hill and built a mosque there. Formerly, this hill must have been bigger and spacious. The high floods and the constant strong currents of the Ganga must have worn away the decaying granite rocks of the hill.
