Mahasu Devta Temple is a 9th century stone structure dedicated to Lord Mahasu (an incarnation of Lord Shiva) located in Hanol village along the banks of the Tons River, roughly 120 kilometers north of Vikasnagar in Uttarakhand. Regarded as the supreme deity and ultimate judge of the Jaunsar Bawar, Rawain, and Himachal tribal belt, Mahasu Devta is worshipped with immense reverence across the region.

The temple is an exquisite example of classical Kath Kuni (interlocking wood and stone) and Nagara architecture, protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Its wooden gables and sanctum exterior feature hundreds of antique brass utensils, animal horns, and ancient coins nailed into the timber walls by devotees over centuries. Inside burns a sacred eternal lamp (Akhand Jyoti) filled with mustard oil that has remained unextinguished for generations.
Truth is, hearing tribal drums beat during the annual Shaant or Bissu fair while gazing at intricate wooden carvings against the roaring Tons river canyon is unforgettable. It represents the authentic living tribal soul of Uttarakhand.
The best time to visit Mahasu Devta Temple is from April to June and September to November when mountain roads across Jaunsar Bawar are clear and dry.
