About Atariya Temple

Located in a sacred grove just 2 kilometers from the city center of Rudrapur in the Udham Singh Nagar district of Uttarakhand, Atariya Temple (Maa Atariya Devi Mandir) is a revered historical Shakti shrine. Built in the late sixteenth century by King Rudra Chand, the illustrious ruler of Kumaon who founded the city of Rudrapur, the temple is dedicated to Goddess Atariya (an incarnation of Goddess Durga).

Atariya Temple Rudrapur Terai

According to regional chronicles, when King Rudra Chand was traveling through the dense Terai marshlands, his royal chariot got deeply bogged down in marshy mud. After performing fervent prayers to the divine mother, he was guided to safety and subsequently consecrated this temple upon a raised earthen mound (Atta), giving the shrine its name Atariya.

The temple is famous across the Terai region for hosting the grand 10 day annual Atariya Mela during Chaitra Navratri. Thousands of devotees from Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi visit to tie sacred red threads, offer coconuts, and participate in cultural folk fairs.
