Lake Naukuchiatal

Resting at an elevation of 1,220 meters in the Kumaon lake district roughly 4 kilometers from Bhimtal and 26 kilometers from Nainital, Lake Naukuchiatal is the deepest lake in Uttarakhand. Spanning approximately 983 meters in length and reaching a depth of 40.3 meters (132 feet), this pristine freshwater body gets its name from its distinctive nine distinct cornered shoreline in Naukuchiatal.

According to local folklore, anyone who can view all nine corners of the lake simultaneously from ground level will attain spiritual enlightenment (Moksha). Fed by an underground natural perennial spring, the crystal clear emerald water is fringed by dense oak trees, weeping willows, and blooming lotus patches.

The lake is a major center for recreational water sports, including shikara style wooden rowing boats, pedal boating, kayaking, and yachting. High takeoff ridges nearby make Naukuchiatal a famous hub for tandem paragliding flights landing right beside the serene lake shore.
