Durga Devi Temple is an ancient rock cut cave shrine dedicated to Goddess Durga, tucked on a forested hill slope along the banks of the roaring Khoh River near Kholachaur, roughly 11 kilometers from Kotdwar in Uttarakhand. built on the scenic road towards Lansdowne, this sacred Hindu sanctuary is one of the most revered pilgrimage stops in the Pauri Garhwal foothills.
Inside a shallow natural limestone cavern, devotees crawl through a short rock opening to reach the inner sanctum where the self manifested stone idol of Maa Durga resides. Devotees tie red sacred cloths (mannat ki chunri) and shiny brass bells to iron grilles around the temple courtyard, believing that the benevolent mother goddess unfailingly fulfills heartfelt wishes. Steps lead down from the temple to clear river pools where visitors can dip their feet and enjoy the cool mountain waters.
Truth is, listening to the roaring Khoh river while hundreds of wind chimes and brass temple bells ring in the mountain breeze is deeply soothing. It remains a cherished spiritual and picnic stopover along the Lansdowne highway in Uttarakhand.
