Kagbhusandi Tal (Kak Bhusundi Lake) is an emerald green alpine glacial lake perched at a high altitude of 5,284 meters (17,336 feet) at the base of Mount Hathi Parvat in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Roughly one kilometer in length and surrounded by soaring glaciated peaks like Hathi and Ghori Parvat, this remote tarn is famed for the rare Brahma Kamal and wild alpine flowers blooming across its rocky shores.
According to the Hindu epic Ramcharitmanas, the enlightened sage Kakbhusundi transformed into a divine crow to narrate the sacred story of Lord Rama to Garuda (the king of birds) on the rocky spur above this lake. Two massive rock formations resembling a crow and an eagle stand atop the ridge near the water. Trekkers starting from Ghangaria or Bhyundar village handle steep boulder moraines, high mountain passes (Kankul Pass at 5,230 m), and pristine glacial valleys to behold the reflecting waters of this sacred tarn.
Kakbhusundi Tal is accessible via an adventurous multi day alpine expedition from Govindghat or Painka village.
