The Gauchar Mela (Fair at Gauchar) is one of the most prestigious and historic state trade and cultural festivals in Uttarakhand. Celebrated annually every November on the expansive, flat river terrace along the Alaknanda River in Chamoli district, this week long fair originally began in 1943 during British rule as an industrial and agricultural trade exchange to build commerce between local mountain villagers, Tibetan merchants, and Bhotia traders.
Today, Gauchar Mela works as a massive vibrant celebration of Garhwali heritage, showcasing authentic folk dances such as Pandav Nritya, traditional music, handloom exhibitions, Ringal cane crafts, and organic mountain produce. Travelers visiting Gauchar during the festival enjoy lively outdoor bazaars, sports tournaments, cultural stage dramas, and traditional wool shopping directly from local mountain weavers.
