Vridha Badri

Located in the serene mountain village of Animath at an elevation of 1,380 meters along the Alaknanda valley in Chamoli district, Vridha Badri is the chronological first among the sacred Sapt Badri (seven Badri) shrines in Uttarakhand. Situated roughly 8 kilometers south of Joshimath and connected along the pilgrimage highway circuit from Gairsain, the shrine represents the primordial form of Lord Vishnu worshipped as an old sage (Vridha).

According to Vedic tradition, divine sage Narada performed deep austerities here to please Lord Vishnu, who appeared before him in the guise of an elderly ascetic (Vridha Badri). The black stone idol enshrined in the inner sanctum is believed to have been carved by the celestial architect Vishwakarma and worshipped before Adi Shankaracharya established modern Badrinath Dham.

Unlike the high altitude Badrinath Temple which remains closed during severe winter snowfall, Vridha Badri remains accessible throughout all twelve months of the year. The peaceful rural setting amidst terraced apple orchards and oak groves offers quiet spiritual reflection for Chardham pilgrims.
