Perched high on a commanding mountain ridge at an elevation of 1,900 meters (6,233 feet) overlooking the Charama river valley in Pithoragarh district, Sirakot (Sirakot Fort) is an ancient military stronghold situated 3 kilometers from Didihat in Uttarakhand. Built in the fourteenth century by King Hari Malla of the Doti Katyuri dynasty as the capital of the historic Sira kingdom, the fortress later saw fierce sieges between the Chand rulers of Kumaon and the Gorkhas.
Today, the fortress site houses the venerable Malay Nath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva in his Nath yogic tradition. Ancient stone bastions, crumbling defensive ramparts, and medieval rock water reservoirs remain visible among dense oak and rhododendron canopies.
A scenic 2 kilometer uphill walking trail through pine fragrant forests leads hikers from Didihat town to the fort ridge. The summit delivers one of the most spectacular unobstructed 180 degree panoramas in the Himalayas, showcasing the snowclad peaks of the Panchachuli range, Trishul, and Mount Api in western Nepal.
