Top Station, built on a dramatic clifftop ridge at an elevation of 1,880 meters (6,170 feet) on the Kerala Tamil Nadu border 32 km east of Munnar in Kerala, is the highest and most impressive panoramic viewpoint in the Kannan Devan Hills.
Historically serving as the topmost aerial ropeway transshipment terminal of the British Kundala Valley Light Railway built in 1902 to transport high grown tea down to the Tamil Nadu plains, this windswept ridge is celebrated for its striking 360 degree vistas across deep mountain valleys and the dramatic ocean of-clouds phenomenon.
It's the home of clifftop lookouts gazing across the vast Theni and Bodi plains of Tamil Nadu, early morning cloud inversions where white mist covers the valley floor like rolling sea waves, heritage ruins of Edwardian ropeway cable stations, and proximity to the Kurinjimala Sanctuary where Neelakurinji flowers blanket the mountains in purple once every 12 years.
It represents a rich highland intersection where Western Ghats mountain geography, colonial plantation engineering history, cool alpine hiking, and dramatic cloud watching unite at the summit of Munnar.
Accessed via the scenic 32 km mountain highway through Mattupetty and Kundala, it sits 140 km east of Cochin International Airport and 120 km northwest of Madurai, making it Munnar's premier scenic driving excursion.
In 1902, the British Kannan Devan Hills Produce Company established India's first monorail, later converting it into the narrow gauge Kundala Valley Railway to haul processed tea across high mountain passes.
Top Station was the highest railway depot on the line. From here, wooden tea chests were transferred onto an incredible 1,500 meter aerial ropeway that lowered cargo steeply down the vertical precipice to Bottom Station (Kottagudi) in Tamil Nadu, from where bullock carts hauled the tea to Tuticorin port.
Truth is, though the historic railway track was washed away in the Great Flood of 1924 (99 le Vellapokkam), you can still see the rusted iron wheel gears, stone anchors, and cable pulleys preserved near the edge of the viewpoint.
Standing at the edge of the cliff, you look directly across the political boundary dividing Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
On clear mornings between 6:00 AM and 8:30 AM, visitors witness the legendary cloud inversion: a thick blanket of fluffy white clouds fills the deep valley below like a vast celestial ocean, while the high peaks of the Western Ghats stand out like islands under golden sunshine.
As the morning breeze warms, the clouds part to reveal the arid green patchwork of villages, coconut farms, and reservoirs in the Theni valley spreading miles into Tamil Nadu below.
The Route from Munnar: The 32 km drive to Top Station is one of South India's most scenic mountain routes. It winds through manicured tea gardens, pausing at Mattupetty Dam (speedboating), Echo Point (natural echo phenomenon across the reservoir), and Kundala Dam (India's first arched dam with pedal boats and cherry blossom trees).
Clifftop Trekking Path: From the parking lot, visitors walk down a scenic 500 meter paved mountain path with sturdy railings leading to the tip of the rocky promontory.
Combine your Top Station day trip with early morning visits to Mattupetty Lake, Kundala Dam, and the Tata Tea Museum in Munnar for the definitive highland holiday experience.
Reaching Top Station from central Munnar is a scenic mountain road drive across Munnar in Kerala.
