Trees turned to stone. That is the whole magic of Thiruvakkarai, a village about 20 km southeast of Tindivanam on the Varahanadi riverbank. The National Fossil Wood Park here protects roughly 200 petrified tree trunks, some stretching 15 meters long and 5 meters around, all locked inside Cuddalore sandstone for around 20 million years.
The Geological Survey of India maintains the site and flagged it a National Geological Monument back in 1951. The park spreads across 247 acres divided into nine enclaves, though only part stays open to visitors. Fair warning, this is a quiet scientific corner of coastal Tamil Nadu, not a theme park. And that is exactly its charm.
The trunks lie horizontal, half buried, with zero branches or leaves left on them. Run your eyes along the cut surfaces and you can still count growth rings. Scientists classify most specimens as Mesembrioxylon schmidianum, a gymnosperm, alongside Peuce schmidiana, an angiosperm. Stone has completely replaced the wood, cell by cell, which is why the texture survives.
Curiosity about this forest of stone runs deep. A European naturalist, M. Sonneret, published the first detailed account of these fossils way back in 1781. The park itself took shape in 1940, well before India gained independence.
Hours run 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily. Wear walking shoes because the trunks sit scattered across open ground. Mornings after rain get muddy, so plan accordingly. Combine the trip with an East Coast Road run toward Mahabalipuram, or make it a detour from Chennai. Kids usually love it, no doubt. Rocks that used to be trees beat any textbook.
Drivers looping down the coast of Tamil Nadu can pair this stop with Puducherry, which lies just beyond on the same side of the state border.
December to February keeps things comfortable. The park grounds are open and shadeless, so summer heat bakes the sandstone hard by late morning.
Carry water and a hat. There are few shelters once you step out among the fossil beds.
