Puri is a city in Odisha that serves as the headquarters of its namesake district. It is said that Puri was earlier a thickly wooded hills, which was inhabited by the Sabaras. The city is mentioned in the Puranas by different names like Srikshetra, Neelachala, Neeladri, Purusottama Dhama and Purusottama Kshetra. The philosophers and religious leaders who have visited the city over the years have left a deep imprint on its culture. For its magnificent Jagannath Temple, the city is known as Jagannath Puri. Notably, it is one of the seven holiest places for Hindus in India. The infamous Puri Beach is counted among the most beautiful beaches in the country. The city is also home to Govaradana Matha, one of the four cardinal institutions formed by Adi Shankaracharaya
Gopalpur-on-Sea as it is popularly known boasts of one of the finest beaches in Odisha. Palm fringed coastline, blue waters and clean sand attract tourist from all over world. You can also visit Gopalpur's local fishing villages, artisans and remnants of its medieval past. The intricate sand sculptures shaped from the beach sand and items created from seashells are a major draw for tourists. The town had large warehouses and godowns due to the links with Burma for trading of rice. Remains of the Gopalpur Port are an apt representation of the rich history of this place.
