About St Philomena’s Church

St. Philomena's Church in Mysore (celebrated internationally as the Cathedral of St. Joseph and St. Philomena, one of Asia's tallest, architecturally grandest, and most grand Neo Gothic Catholic cathedrals, inspired by the monumental Cologne Cathedral in Germany and commissioned in 1936 by Maharaja Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV), located along Ashoka Road in Mysore in Karnataka, stands as a prime monument of secular royal heritage.

Designed by French architect Rev. Father Rene Feuge in the classic Neo Gothic cruciform floor plan with towering 175 foot spires visible from across Mysuru, this royal cathedral was built to house the sacred 3rd century bone relic of Saint Philomena gifted to the Mysore royal court by the Apostolic Delegate of the East Indies in 1926.

It's the home of the soaring 175 foot twin spires crowned with ornate stone crosses, the grand cross shaped central nave accommodating up to 800 worshippers under vaulted rib ceilings, the striking French stained glass windows illustrating the Birth of Christ, the Last Supper, the Crucifixion, and the Resurrection in rich jewel tones, the underground stone crypt beneath the main altar enshrining the holy relic and a beautiful marble statue of Saint Philomena resting in martyrdom, the imposing marble high altar sculpted with intricate biblical reliefs, and an intensely reverent, spiritually uplifting atmosphere where gentle colored sunlight filtering through French stained glass illuminates centuries of royal devotion.

It represents a rich 90 year-old Wadiyar royal patronage legacy, French Neo Gothic ecclesiastical architecture, and interfaith harmony where 175 foot twin spires, French stained glass windows, subterranean crypts, and royal marble altars unite in St Philomenas Church Mysore.

Located on Ashoka Road near the central city ring, it sits just 2.5 km north of Mysore Palace, 2 km from Mysore Junction Railway Station (MYS), 12 km from Mysuru Airport (MYQ), and 145 km from Bengaluru, easily accessible on foot, by auto rickshaw, city bus, or private cab with organized church parking.

St Philomenas Cathedral Neo-Gothic Twin Spires and Architecture in Mysore Karnataka

1936 Maharaja Consecration & 175 Ft Twin Spires

Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV personally laid the church foundation stone in October 1933, demonstrating the Wadiyar dynasty's profound tradition of interfaith patronization.

The twin spires are modeled directly after the Cologne Cathedral, featuring delicate stone tracery, pointed lancet arches, and flying buttresses that define high European Gothic design.

Truth is, descending the stone steps into the cool, silent underground crypt beneath the altar is a deeply moving experience.
