Established in 1960 under the leadership of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and Karnataka Chief Minister S. Nijalingappa (who allocated 3,000 acres of fertile farmland for Tibetan refugees across Lugsum Samdupling and Dickey Larsoe settlements), Bylakuppe was consecrated spiritually in 1963 by Holiness Penor Rinpoche with the founding of the sacred Thegchog Namdrol Shedrub Dargye Ling (Namdroling Monastery).

It's the home of the three colossal 40 foot gilded copper statues of Buddha Shakyamuni, Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche), and Buddha Amitayus soaring inside the main prayer hall, the intricate wall frescoes painted with natural mineral pigments depicting Tibetan Buddhist deities and mandalas, the daily 1:00 PM monastic prayer assembly where hundreds of monks chant deep resonant mantras accompanied by giant brass horns (dungchen), cymbals (rolmo), and drums, the tranquil manicured monastery gardens decorated with colorful fluttering prayer flags, spinning brass prayer wheels, and sacred Bodhi trees, the traditional Tibetan handicraft markets and family restaurants serving steaming momos, thukpa, tingmo buns, and authentic butter tea, and an intensely peaceful, deeply spiritual atmosphere where Tibetan Buddhist heritage thrives across Karnataka's Western Ghats.

1963 Namdroling Monastery & 40 Foot Gold Buddhas

Founded by Penor Rinpoche in 1963 with just a handful of monks, Namdroling Monastery has grown into the largest teaching center of the Nyingmapa school of Tibetan Buddhism in the world.

The centerpiece of the Golden Temple consists of three towering 40 foot copper gilded statues containing sacred relics, scriptures, and holy dharanis sealed within their cores.

Truth is, sitting silently on the cool temple carpets as hundreds of maroon robed monks chant in deep unison while brass trumpets sound is an intensely moving experience.
