People call it the Niagara of India, and standing at the rim you get why. Chitrakote Falls sits on the Indravati River about 38 km west of Jagdalpur in Bastar district, Chhattisgarh. The river drops roughly 29 meters in a single wide horseshoe curtain, and during peak monsoon that curtain stretches nearly 300 meters across. Widest waterfall in the country. No contest.
Truth is, Chitrakote wears a different face every season. Between July and October the Indravati runs brown and furious, filling the full horseshoe edge while mist catches sunlight to throw rainbows across the gorge. Come summer, the flow thins into graceful white ribbons over dark rock, and boat rides operate on the calm pools below.
On the left bank, small grottoes known as the Parvati caves sit beside a shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. Locals treat the falls itself as sacred ground. These days the tourism board also lights up the falls after dusk on select evenings, which turns the whole amphitheater into something from another planet.
Bastar rewards travelers who linger. The falls pair naturally with Teerathgarh Falls and Kanger Valley National Park nearby, and Jagdalpur makes an easy base with its markets and Bastar Dussehra festivities. One trip, a whole different side of Chhattisgarh.
Road trippers exploring central Chhattisgarh often bundle Chitrakote with Teerathgarh Falls and the Kanger Valley caves into one Bastar circuit.
July to October delivers the famous full width spectacle. The Indravati swells with monsoon flow, rainbows arc through the spray, and the horseshoe shows its true scale.
Carry cash for local stalls, since network coverage dips around the gorge.
