Anamudi Peak, towering at a majestic elevation of 2,695 meters (8,842 feet) within the protected wilderness of Eravikulam National Park near Munnar in Kerala, stands as the highest mountain summit in South India and the entire Western Ghats.
Affectionately celebrated as the "Everest of South India" and translating from Malayalam to the "Elephant's Forehead" due to its distinctive rounded dome, this monumental granite peak marks the tri junction where the Anaimalai, Cardamom, and Palani mountain ranges converge under cool alpine mists.
It's the home of the world's largest surviving population of the endangered Nilgiri Tahr (mountain goat), rare high altitude montane shola grassland ecosystems, the legendary Neelakurinji flower blooming once every 12 years across rolling purple mountain slopes, and panoramic views of mist covered tea valleys.
It represents a rich ecological pinnacle where pristine Western Ghats biodiversity, endemic high altitude wildlife conservation, scenic safari bus rides, and alpine nature photography unite in high Idukki.
Located 13 km north of Munnar town along the Munnar Udumalpet Road (SH 17), it sits 115 km from Aluva Railway Station and 125 km east of Cochin International Airport (COK), easily accessible by hired cab or tourist bus.
Anamudi is the undisputed geographic monarch of peninsular India, featuring an impressive topographic prominence of over 2,400 meters.
Its massive rock face drops precipitously into deep forested gorges on its northern and eastern flanks, feeding major South Indian river systems including the Periyar, Chalakkudy, and Amaravathi rivers.
Truth is, while earlier mountaineers climbed the summit, direct trekking to the peak crest is now strictly prohibited by the Kerala Forest Department to preserve the fragile high altitude alpine ecology and protect the wild breeding grounds of the Nilgiri Tahr.
The Nilgiri Tahr (Varayaadu): The rolling shola grasslands around Anamudi shelter over 750 Nilgiri Tahrs, more than half the global wild population. These stocky mountain ungulates with curved horns are exceptionally sure footed on steep cliffs and can often be photographed grazing calmly just meters away from visitors along the Rajamalai trail.
The 12 Year Neelakurinji Bloom: Once every twelve years, the shrub Strobilanthes kunthiana (Neelakurinji) blossoms simultaneously across the slopes of Anamudi, painting the entire mountain range in a dazzling sea of purplish blue petals that attracts botanists from across the world.
Forest Safari Buses: Access to Anamudi's viewpoints is managed via comfortable Kerala Forest Department safari buses that drive visitors from the Fifth Mile ticket counter through tea estates up to the Rajamalai base camp.
The 1.5 km Mountain Walk: From the bus drop off point, a scenic 1.5 kilometer paved pathway winds gently uphill along the mountain shoulder, offering striking 360 degree panoramas of Anamudi's sheer granite peak, cascading waterfalls, and distant tea clad valleys.
After your mountain safari at Anamudi, continue your Munnar itinerary with visits to the Tata Tea Museum, Mattupetty Dam, Echo Point, and the roaring cascades of Attukal Waterfalls for a memorable hill station vacation.
Reaching Anamudi Peak inside Eravikulam National Park is simple from Munnar town across Munnar in Kerala.
