Azamgarh is an important town of Eastern Uttar Pradesh. The town has been home to Azamgarh Nationalist Movement initiated by Maulana Shibli Nomani. Maulana Shibli Nomani was a famous theologian and philosopher. One Azam Khan, a very powerful landlord during the reign of Shah Jahan, in the year 1665, established Azamgarh. The city gets mentioned in various government gazettes of that era too. The city rose to prominence during the freedom movement when Shibli National College was founded. Established in the year 1883 by Maulana Shibli Nomani, Shibli College soon went on to become a major center of Nationalist movement. The college became the center of activity for names such as Shaukat Ali, Maulana Sulaiman Nadwi, Maulana Rabey Hasan Nadwi, Hasrat Mohani, Masood Ali and Moti Lal Nehru.
