The 12th Century Mahishasurmardini Idol & Sacred Sanctum

Although consecrated as a Kali temple, the central sanctum houses an exquisite 12th century Pala Sena black stone idol of Mahishasurmardini Durga slaying the buffalo demon Mahishasura.

The idol was discovered during the excavation of the lake under Maharaja Dhanya Manikya and is adorned daily with red hibiscus garlands, sindoor, and silver ornaments by the royal Sevayat priests.

Truth is, standing in the inner sanctum while the priest performs the evening aarti with rhythmic conch shells and brass lamps is deeply moving.
