Yanam shouldn't exist, and yet it does. A pocket of Puducherry union territory sitting 850 km from Pondicherry itself, wedged into coastal Andhra Pradesh on the Gautami Godavari's bank. The French held this little riverside town from 1731 until 1954, and the promenade along its riverfront still carries that odd, charming inheritance.
Today Yanam makes an easy half day trip from Kakinada or Ramachandrapuram. You come for the river breeze, the French street names, a replica Eiffel Tower glowing at night, and sunsets over one of India's widest rivers.
The French East India Company established its lodge here in 1731, taking advantage of Godavari trade routes. Yanaon, as they spelled it, became one of five comptoirs of French India alongside Pondicherry, Karikal, Mahe, and Chandernagor.
Control flipped between French, British, and Dutch hands during the colonial wars. The old Court House in town, the Palais de justice, traces its bones back to a Dutch period structure. After Indian independence, Yanam's residents voted to join the Republic in 1954, with the formal treaty signed in 1956 and merger completed by 1963.
French remains an official language here on paper, and you'll spot it on signboards, memorials, and the occasional elderly resident who still speaks it. Truth is, Telugu runs daily life. The Frenchness shows up in details, wide boulevard layouts, a war memorial with French inscriptions, and that unmistakable riverside promenade design.
The riverfront strip is the whole show. Paved walkways run beside the broad Gautami channel, lined with gardens, food stalls, and benches facing the water. Families arrive around 5 PM as the heat breaks, kids chase each other across the lawns, and boatmen tout short river cruises.
The Beach Park section adds rides and a mini train for children. An Eiffel Tower replica rises near the park entrance, kitschy and completely delightful after dark when it lights up. Honestly, nobody comes to Yanam for world class architecture. They come for this easy, breezy evening ritual.
French War Memorial. A quiet monument honoring soldiers of the World Wars, carrying French inscriptions. Worth ten respectful minutes on your walk.
Court House (Palais de justice). One of the oldest surviving colonial buildings, still functioning as a court. Admire from outside since access stays restricted.
Venkanna Babu Temple. The town's spiritual heart, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, drawing big crowds during the annual Ratha festival. The temple ghat steps lead straight down to the river.
St Joseph's Church. A neat Catholic church continuing Yanam's French Christian thread, calm inside even at midday.
Godavari boat rides. Short cruises leave the ghat area toward the confluence stretches where the Gautami widens toward the bay. Evening slots carry the best light.
Downstream, the Gautami Godavari spreads into a braided mouth before meeting the Bay of Bengal near Coringa's mangroves. Boatmen run longer trips toward these confluence stretches where river turns brackish and dolphins occasionally surface in season.
Mind you, this is a working river. Cargo barges, fishing canoes, and ferries share the water with tourist boats. That everyday rhythm is part of the charm, you're watching the delta live its life rather than a staged show.
The promenade stalls fry up hot bajji, boil peanuts, and scoop ice cream for strolling families. For a proper meal, Yanam's small hotels serve coastal Andhra staples, fish curry, pulusu, and gongura pachadi with mountains of rice.
French influence lingers faintly in some bakery counters. Try the local breads and cakes if you spot a old style boulangerie signboard. Kakinada's famous kaja sits just 30 minutes away for dessert runs.
Yanam sits surprisingly close to the East Godavari transport grid:
