Ralamandal Wildlife Sanctuary (the protected 5 square-kilometer forested hill sanctuary established in 1989 as the oldest wildlife reserve in Madhya Pradesh, renowned for its 1905 Holkar royal hunting lodge, free roaming blackbucks, and hill trekking trails) in Indore in Madhya Pradesh, stands as central India's supreme urban wildlife reserve and eco hilltop retreat landmark.
Rising above the southeastern plains of Indore along the bypass highway, this protected deciduous forest reserve provides a vital wildlife habitat for endangered blackbucks and deer species within easy reach of the metropolis.
It's the home of spiraled horn blackbucks darting across grassy hill clearings, spotted deer herds grazing under teak trees, the historic stone Shikargah palace crowning the hill summit, scenic battery car safaris, camel riding tracks, and an intensely refreshing, deeply peaceful wilderness ambiance filled with morning bird chirps, rustling dry teak leaves, and sweeping sunset panoramas over the city skyline.
It represents a rich Madhya Pradesh wildlife conservation heritage apex, Holkar royal forestry history, and ecotourism where forested hills, Tincha Falls cascades, Patalpani Waterfalls gorges, and Pipliyapala Regional Park lakes unite in Ralamandal Wildlife Sanctuary.
Located on Ralamandal Road off the Indore Bypass, it sits 12 km from Sarwate Bus Stand, 13 km from Indore Junction Railway Station (INDB), 20 km from Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport (IDR), and 15 km from Tincha Falls, easily reached by auto, taxi, or private car.
Erected in 1905 by the Holkar rulers as a royal hunting retreat, the stone Shikargah at the summit has been converted into an educational wildlife interpretation center with viewing binoculars.
Visitors can trek the paved 3 kilometer slope or take electric safari carts to observe thriving herds of blackbucks, sambar deer, nilgai, and leopards that occasionally roam the upper ridges.
Truth is, trekking to the breezy Shikargah viewpoint just as the sun sets behind the distant Vindhya hills is one of the most relaxing outdoor activities in Indore.
Tincha Falls: Located 15 km southeast, witness the thunderous 300 foot monsoon waterfall plunging down a rugged basalt canyon.
Patalpani Falls & Pipliyapala: Tour the 300 foot Patalpani gorge in Mhow and stroll around the illuminated lake gardens at Pipliyapala.
The Wildlife Hill & Nature Trail Circuit: Morning start with hot poha jalebi and chai in Indore (7:00 AM) -> drive 12 km southeast to Ralamandal Wildlife Sanctuary (7:45 AM to 10:45 AM: take the hill safari cart or hike the 3 km forest trail, visit the 1905 Holkar Shikargah interpretation center, spot blackbucks & enjoy treetop birdwatching) -> drive 15 km to Tincha Falls and Berchha Lake (11:15 AM to 1:00 PM) -> authentic thali lunch at a highway garden restaurant (1:15 PM to 2:30 PM) -> head to Pipliyapala Regional Park (3:30 PM to 6:00 PM: enjoy boating and musical fountain shows) -> evening food tour at Sarafa Bazaar (7:30 PM to 10:00 PM) -> return to hotel.
Visiting Code & Conduct: Feeding animals or littering inside the sanctuary is strictly prohibited; stay on designated trails and paved roads; battery golf carts are available for elderly visitors; morning hours (7:00 AM to 10:00 AM) offer the best opportunity to spot blackbucks grazing in open clearings.
After exploring the wooded hills of Ralamandal Wildlife Sanctuary, visit Tincha Falls, tour Patalpani Waterfalls, or explore Pipliyapala Regional Park.
