Nargund


Nargund is a town in Gadag district in the Indian state of Karnataka. Nargund was ruled by the Venkat Rao of the Bhave dynasty during the late 18th century on behalf of the Maratha Peshwas of Poona. Hyder Ali, the ruler of Mysore subjugated it in 1778. The Brahmin zamindars of Nargund were loyal to the Maratha Peshwas, It was attacked by Tipu Sultan in 1784, who were force retreat fearing an attack by the Marathas. Nargund came under Maratha suzerainty in 1787, after it was surrendered by Tipu Sultan to the Marathas.



Nargund Fort is located in Nargund or Naragunda, a town in Gadag district of Karnataka. The fort is ideally located on a hilltop and forms a perfect backdrop for a town which is otherwise not on the major tourist circuit of Karnataka. Nargund fort was construed by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1675.
