Excavated in 1842 under British Political Agent Colonel Thomas Ouseley, the lake originally served as a vital urban percolation reservoir to elevate groundwater tables across the Chota Nagpur plateau.

Locals traditionally refer to this expansive water body as Bada Talab, recognizing its immense historical role in shaping neighborhood life around Upper Bazar.

Truth is, in 2019 the lake gained national prominence when a 33 foot bronze statue of Swami Vivekananda was unveiled on a newly constructed islet in the center of the lake.

Renowned sculptor Ram V. Sutar crafted this impressive monument to commemorate Vivekananda's philosophical visits to Ranchi during the late 19th century.
