Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary, sprawling across 86 square kilometers of dense Western Ghats rainforest in Canacona taluka of South Goa in Goa, stands as Goa's second largest wildlife reserve and its most enchanting bio diverse jungle retreat.
Established in 1968 along the Talpona and Galgibaga river headwaters near the Goa Karnataka border, this protected sanctuary is famous for its towering multi tiered semi evergreen forest canopy where 30 to 45 meter-high trees interlock so densely that sunlight rarely reaches the forest floor in deep interior tracts.
It's the home of an adventurous 25 meter-high treetop watchtower overlooking a forest waterhole, rare nocturnal flying squirrels and Malabar giant squirrels leaping between mossy boughs, shy pangolins and mouse deer, over 200 species of tropical forest birds, and ancient tribal settlements of the Kunbi and Velip communities.
It represents a rich ecological haven where Western Ghats evergreen biodiversity, botanical research trails, tranquil canopy watchtowers, and indigenous forest conservation unite in southern Goa.
Located 10 km south of Canacona town off National Highway 66, it sits 12 km from Palolem Beach, 50 km south of Margao (Madgaon Railway Station, MAO), and 75 km from Goa International Airport (Dabolim, GOI), easily reached by rented scooter, cab, or private car.
Cotigao's unique appeal lies in its pristine botanical density. The sanctuary features eight distinct nature trails winding through moist deciduous and semi evergreen woodlands.
Giant Anjili, teak, and rosewood trees are wrapped in thick woody lianas, epiphytic orchids, and velvet mosses, creating a cool microclimate filled with the hum of cicadas and bubbling forest streams.
Truth is, the forest canopy is so multi tiered and dense that visitors experience a perpetual twilight ambience while walking through the central botanical reserve.
The sanctuary's most exciting attraction is the 25 meter-high Machan (treetop watchtower) built atop a massive deciduous tree, reached via a sturdy wooden ladder bolted to the trunk.
From this elevated treetop hideout, you overlook a natural waterhole where wildlife gathers at dawn and dusk. Lucky observers can spot flying squirrels gliding between branches, mouse deer, four horned antelopes (Chousingha), Indian wild boars, and shy pangolins coming to drink.
Ornithologist's Paradise: With over 200 catalogued bird species, birdwatchers with binoculars can spot rare Western Ghats endemics including the striking Malabar trogon, white bellied woodpecker, emerald dove, velvet fronted nuthatch, and heart spotted woodpecker.
Nature Interpretation Centre: Located at the Hathipal entry gate, the interpretation center displays interactive botanical exhibits, wildlife models, and cultural artifacts representing the heritage of the indigenous Kunbi and Velip forest dwelling tribes.
After a morning jungle trek through Cotigao, head to the nearby coast to relax at the golden sands of Palolem Beach and Agonda Beach, or explore the historic clifftop ramparts of Cabo de Rama Fort.
Reaching Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary in South Goa is easy from Canacona and Margao across South Goa in Goa.
