Sitting at the fork where the Betwa and Bes rivers meet in central Madhya Pradesh, Vidisha is an open air museum of ancient Indian history. An extraordinary 2,100 year old monolithic stone Garuda pillar erected in 113 BC by Heliodorus, a Greek ambassador sent by King Antialcidas of Taxila to the court of Sunga King Bhagabhadra. The Prakrit inscription in ancient Brahmi script declares Heliodorus as a Bhagavata (devotee of Lord Vasudeva Krishna), making it one of the earliest physical records of foreign conversion to Hinduism.
