Jingdezhen is a prefecture-level city, previously a town, in northeastern Jiangxi province, China, Situated in a mountainous area, the topography of Jingdezhen changes from the north-east to the south-west. Most areas in north-east and north-west are dominated by mountains, while the areas in south-east and south-west are dominated by hills of only 200 meters. Chang River and Le'an River cross the region from north to south. Known as the "porcelain city" since the Song dynasty, it has a long history of over 1700 years of porcelain making. During the Spring and Autumn Period (770 - 476 ), it was originally situated to the east of Chu boundary. Then it became a town under Jiujiang County of the Qin Dynasty (221 - 207). It was called Poyang County during the Han Dynasty (206 – 220). Jingdezhen got its present name from the Song Dynasty (960 – 1279) when blue and white porcelain was produced in this area.
