Khali Estate

Sprawling across 26 acres of pristine oak, rhododendron, and pine woodlands at an altitude of 2,000 meters inside the Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary in Almora district, Khali Estate is a historic colonial estate situated 3 kilometers from Binsar in Uttarakhand. Built in 1875 by Sir Henry Ramsay, the legendary British Commissioner of Kumaon (often called the King of Kumaon), the heritage stone bungalow later served as the mountain retreat of prominent freedom fighters and national leaders.

The estate was later purchased by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's sister, Vijayalakshmi Pandit, and served as a frequent creative retreat for India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, and world renowned spiritual seeker Mahatma Gandhi's disciples. The estate now is a boutique eco heritage resort preserving vintage colonial fireplaces, hand hewn wooden beams, and historical archives.

Guests and day walkers enjoy complete tranquility with no blaring horns or televisions, surrounded only by chirping Himalayan birds and rustling pine needles. The estate grounds offer panoramic 300 kilometer vistas of the snowclad Himalayan peaks, including Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Kedarnath.
