Hindupur is the second largest town of Anantpur district, in the state of Karnataka. Located on the banks of Penner River, this town has an average elevation of 621 m. Hindupur is also one of the two towns marking the border between the states of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, the other being Koratagere taluk. The parliamentary constituency of Hindupur is a Special grade 1 municipality. The town is believed to have got its name from Murari Rao, a Maratha Chieftain, who christened it as 'Hindupur' in remembrance of his father Hindoji Rao, or King Hindurao. As per The Imperial Gazetteer of India, Hindupur was a taluk of Anantpur district in Madras province encompassing 74 villages. The native languages of the town are Telugu and Urdu, but Kannada is also spoken widely.



The town is believed to be named after a king Hindurao. Hindupur is famous among tourists for the various interesting places here. Mig church grounds, iron market yard and industrial estate are some of the famous places of Hindupur. Some of the famous theatres are Gurunath theatres, Balaji talkies, Vishnu theatre and Lakshmi theatre. Kamasalpet in Hindupur is very popular for traditional goldsmiths and jewellers.
